File sharing has many benefits for busy companies but there are downsides too.

If one member of staff is modifying a file the last thing you want is someone else sneaking up on the blind side and making their own alterations. The result is confusion and recriminations all round – plus wasted time.

Now available from Purple Rage Software, PeerLock adds file locking to Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS), which allows organisations to build an infrastructure of co-ordinated and distributed file servers and makes it easy for users to access and manage files across a network.

The two products are a winning combination. PeerLock takes the worry out of file sharing – and could prevent a lot of arguments.

A stand-alone file locking solution, PeerLock ensures that when a user is modifying a file, no other person will be allowed to make changes to that file on any machine that the user has chosen to lock.

PeerLock, which includes real-time detection of file use and immediate remote locking, allows users to concentrate on their files, not the file locking system, and supports office branches and servers in different locations.
Other advantages of PeerLock are:

•    Installation is easy and operation unobtrusive
•    File locking and release is multi-threaded to prevent queuing
•    Failed connection retries
•    Log file reporting

PeerSync v8.5.2

January 13th, 2011

Purple Rage is pleased to announce that Peer Software has released a minor patch to the PeerSync product.(Version 8.5.2). Several updates have been made to enhance existing features as well as to address reported issues. We would advise clients to be on the latest release for optimal product performance.

Synchronization

ID

DESCRIPTION

1478

NEW! Added
the ability to disable real-time renames of files/folders that are moved
between directories via the new /Q7G command line argument. This can be
used when not using the “Replicate – Delete unmatched files”
option to maintain both the moved from and moved to file(s)
or folder(s).

1486

Improved default real-time
detection analysis time for unfiltered events. This fix should address
real-time detection failures which result in getting the following messages
in the PSError log:

Possible loss of event detection for: PATH

1488

Improved default real-time
detection processing time for filtered events.

1492

Fixed an issue where moving
files and/or folders from an excluded folder to an included folder would
not be added to the target during enhanced real-time.

1499

Fixed a potential oscillation
issue during bi-directional synchronization that may cause deleted folders
to be re-added back from the target.

1505

Improved scanning performance
by removing unneeded calls to update the interface counters (files added,
updated etc.)

1507

Fixed an issue where deleting
target folders
during a scan would cause a false connection failure and
the pending/running statistics would display incorrect values. In addition,
the following potential issues were addressed:

Possibility for scans to hang or abort when target folders
were deleted during the scan

Scan would hang with one or more copy threads still running

1516

Resolved an issue that
occurred when using the /ENSCAN option (to skip real-time scans of
folder adds and renames). If a folder rename failed the folder would not be
added to the target because a scan would not occur.

1514

Improved CPU Usage during
event processing when there are internal retries queued up.

1525

Improved logic for converting
events to RT Scans when the event limit is exceeded. The default is to
convert events to RT Scans when the detected or in process count exceeds
10000 items. When this limit was met there were cases where more than
one RT Scan per sub folder was being created. Now only one RT Scan per sub
folder will be created when possible.

1527

Improved synchronization
performance during FTP by removing unneeded requests during file transfers.

ACLs

ID

DESCRIPTION

1489

Fixed an issue during the
comparison of ACLs where files seemed to always need to update the SACL.
This issue would occur when enabling Auditing to the target file, and then
removing it while not modifying the source. This would cause the source and
target SACL to be seen as different.

Reporting

ID

DESCRIPTION

1508

NEW! When
generating a support info file (SupportInfo.zip) backup log and PSError
files from PeerLock will now be gathered.

1479

Added reporting if a copy thread is started and the source
file does not or no longer exists. This ability can be disabled via the
/Q7Q argument.

Note: This should not be disabled for Profiles with enhanced
bi-directional scans because it may cause unwanted deletions during scans.

Example:

Cannot open source file: FILENAME will
now contain the note [Source File Does Exist] in the mode column

1485

Improved scanning performance by no longer creating the PROFILE.tot.xml
file by default. Writing to xml files with lots of jobs (100+) would slow
down scanning of folders with minimal content. To re-enable the previous
behaviour use the /QY7:T+ argument.

/QY7:(T+)(C-)(A-)(E-)(n)

T+:

Turn on
PROFILE.tot.xml

C-:

Turn off
PROFILE.cur.xml

E-:

Turn off file
extension tracking

A-:

Turn All xml logic
off

n:

Update status
interval (default 60 seconds)

1496

NEW! Added
event counters to the XML files to store additional real-time event
information.

1522

NEW! Added
the ability to skip the logging of “Source File Does Exist”
log entries via the /Q7Q argument. These messages are normally
reported when a stale event is thrown away inside a copy thread because the
file added/updated no longer exists.

1513

Fixed an issue where the
source path would sometimes be incorrectly used instead of the target path
for the message:

Cannot create folder: PATH

Miscellaneous

ID

DESCRIPTION

1484

NEW! Added
a new event trigger file,Stop.evt, which will stop PeerSync without
saving pending/running events. The existing SaveTerm.evt and Restart.evt
trigger files currently save pending/running events.

Old/existing event files:

Running.evt

Restart.evt

SaveTerm.evt

Load.evt

ManagedFiles.evt

Retries.evt

FailedEvents.evt

FailedScans.evt

1491

Fixed an issue where the
PeerSync service would not stop properly when there were pending events.

1494

Fixed an issue where some
arguments needed to be uppercase to work properly.

1495

Expanded the global exclusion
logic via the /QR argument. This argument is equivalent to the /QR4
option below.

/QR1

Default for 8.5.1
and earlier. Check exclusions during real-time analysis.

/QR2

Checked exclusions
during real-time processing (after analysis) but may check for

file/folder
existence before being excluded.

/QR4

Checked exclusions
earlier than QR2 before file hits (new default for 8.5.2 and newer

if /QR is currently
used)

/QR3

Default for 8.0 and
earlier (both 1 and 2 were checked)

Note: This
logic only looks for common excluded file types between all real-time Jobs
and does not check against file inclusions.

1498

Fixed possible issues which
may occur on restart if PeerSync was stopped abruptly while EOFM or VSS
were in process.

1500

Fixed an issue were the
Profiler would not start when running under a non administrative account.

1502

Fixed the following Blackout
related issues:

Long delays and/or freezing of PeerSync when exiting a
blackout period where scans for several Jobs where missed during the
blackout.

The ‘Running Scans’ count would be incremented for Jobs
Scans initiated during a blackout.

Job threads would be started and then exited for Jobs Scans
initiated during a blackout.

1503

NEW! Added
alternate copy file argument options (/GFE)

/GFE(R)(N)(S)

R

Remove
COPY_FILE_OPEN_SOURCE_FOR_WRITE

N

Add
COPY_FILE_NO_BUFFERING

S

Add
COPY_FILE_COPY_SYMLINK

D

Remove
COPY_FILE_ALLOW_DECRYPTED_DESTINATION

1504

Fixed an issue where Additional
Jobs
would leave the Pending Event Status (Job Scans) display at
a negative number based on the number of additional jobs that were created
and scanned at start.

Example:

Pending Event Status: Pending Items (Job Scans: -25)

1506

Fixed an issue where PeerSync
would ocasionally freeze at start when loading a Profile.

1501

NEW! Added
some Windows 2008 R2 Core compatibility features:

Profiler and Profile Editor fail to start.

Added new input dialog for snc path on file save as.

Successful ‘Save as’ would not clear the dirty flag, now
does.

1463

Fixed a Profiler interface
issue where the Enhanced Bi-directional option could be
enabled when Enhanced Scanning was selected. This should not be
allowed since Enhanced Scanning is not supported when doing Enhanced
Bi-directional synchronization. At run-time however, it did not appear to
do Enhanced Scanning. It was only an interface issue.

1515

Resolved a display issue
where disabling the “Use skins” option and then selecting the “View” menu
and mouse over to another menu would sometimes cause the menu to flicker in
the upper right corner of the Profiler.

1521

NEW! Added
the ability to treat file/folder moves as adds/deletes instead of renames
via the /Q7G argument. This is useful during renames if you want to
ignore deleting the file from which it was renamed (i.e. if you have “Replicate
- Delete unmatched file
” option disabled for the job).

1526

Fixed a possible issue with
the /QF(+)(+)(+) (Precision Comparison) argument especially when
used in conjunction with the Always Overwrite (update target files if
source is newer)
setting.
