Don’t slack, backup

May 16th, 2011

If New Labour’s mantra in the 1990s was ‘education, education, education’ then IT managers’ must surely be ‘backup…’

We’re also fond of that phrase here at Purple Rage Software as our mission is to find the perfect software solution for businesses of all shapes and sizes.

One of the high quality products in our portfolio is NovaBACKUP Remote Workforce and the NovaStor experts have put together some case studies to give you an idea of how their product might suit your business.

Take a large manufacturing company with 2,000 corporate workstations – but without a reliable backup solution.

All employees are responsible for either backing up their own machines or making sure that their data is saved to a networked drive that is regularly being backed up.

If it continues to pursue its current policy, the company faces the risks of employees forgetting to save their data and recoveries that cost both valuable time and money.

But then major data losses always happen to someone else – don’t they?

The hassle-free installation of a remote backup solution will ensure that all desktop workstations will be protected.

From a central management console, the administrator will create and automate backup jobs for individual machines or custom groups.

Once the installation is completed, the administrator can monitor all clients from the central management console. They can also study detailed logs to find out the cause of any failures.

Training sessions, which make it easy for employees to recover data on their own, last just 30 minutes.

So let’s sum up the main benefits:

• Speedy implementation through silent install;
• Central management increases the amount of successful data recoveries;
• Data loss incidents are reduced by implementing corporate protection policy;
• Ideal for non-technical users;
• Reduced workload for data recovery leaves IT employees more time to focus on day-to-day tasks.

The power of two

May 12th, 2011

We’ve explored the plus points and downsides of file sharing software packages in our recent blogs.

Content management systems, file replication and mirroring, WAN optimisation and Wide Area File Services (WAFS) have all come under the Purple Rage Software microscope.

But which one is best? TV funnyman Harry Hill would probably jump up, slap the desk and shout “Fight!” at this point. However, we’ve got a more positive – and less damaging – solution.

Combining technologies is ideal for businesses who wish to improve user productivity by making shared files available locally and avoid version control problems through remote file locking.

Some Wide Area File Services products include a remote file locking product that can be used in conjunction with file replication.

When integrated with Microsoft DFS, Peer Software’s PeerLock provides fast file access and conserves bandwidth – and is cost effective too.

This formula doesn’t suit everyone, however, as file replication products like Microsoft DFS are not suitable for organisations with thousands of files and many different locations because of a lack of management tools and limited threading. In this case, a full WAFS solution ticks all the right boxes.

Many businesses have discovered that WAN optimisation plus WAFS solutions works well. WAN optimisation appliances are placed in larger areas and WAFS is used to replicate and lock files across all sites.

This dynamic duo combines local access to files, version control and effective bandwidth utilisation for voice and video traffic – all much cheaper than installing appliances in every location.

For more information about combining technologies, call Purple Rage Software. Our experienced and friendly team can evaluate your exact needs and recommend the most suitable file sharing solution.

Purple Rage Software is now distributing the acclaimed SMB product range of data protection specialist NovaStor.

NovaBACKUP replaces Acronis True Image in the Purple Rage portfolio as both products offer similar data protection functionality. However, beyond single workstation and server protection, NovaStor’s product range offers an impressive range of cloud backup and management features for distributed installations.

The acclaimed NovaStor products protect Windows workstations, servers, unlimited virtual machines on a VMware server and allow for backup on all popular local and online storage devices.

NovaStor solutions also provide data protection services in a private cloud and central management enables resellers to offer managed backup services to customers for a reasonable price and with little administrative effort.

Combining local and online file backup with imaging technology, NovaBACKUP boasts additional features for professional data protection such as compression, virus protection and open file backup.

Customers and critics alike love it with recent awards including Consumers Digest Best Buy for 2011 and the Top Ten Reviews Gold Award for Windows Server Backup.

Jan Gregson, Purple Rage Software’s sales and channels director, said: “NovaStor’s data protection software products provide resellers with full-fledged data protection solutions that fulfil customer’s demands at an excellent price. NovaStor also enables resellers to enter the market for cloud computing and managed services.”

NovaStar chief executive, Stefan Utzinger, added: “Purple Rage is a renowned UK distributor familiar with the high demands of users in the country. With the common focus on data protection, secure data storage, backup, and distributed systems, NovaStor’s partnership with Purple Rage holds the promise of new opportunities and solutions that exceed end users’ as well as resellers’ expectations.”
